About the Preble Turf Campaign

Our vision is to convert our athletic field to synthetic turf to provide our students with a safe, accessible and equitable athletic experience at Preble High School.

Safety

Studies have shown that synthetic turf fields are safer than natural grass sports surfaces when it comes to the frequency of injuries, severity of injuries and number of concussions.

Access

Synthetic turf can be used over 1,500 hours per year (10-15 times the normal usage of a grass field). Synthetic turf allows teams to practice and play during inclement weather, leading to fewer cancelled practices and events. Grass surfaces do not allow for the community to utilize the field, as the maintenance of the field requires limited access and greater recovery time.

Equity

The WIAA has requirements to hosting tournament games. Neutral football site playoff games are awarded most frequently to facilities with turf. Preble has not been awarded a game in over 10 years. The WIAA also requires synthetic turf or soccer-only fields to host boys soccer WIAA tournament games. Preble has not been able to host any regional or sectional games. The effect of the WIAA synthetic turf field requirements mean a loss of home field advantage, more travel for our students and families, less opportunity for school involvement, and use of additional resources such as buses and food. It also creates a loss of revenue, including concession revenue, Booster Club revenue and ticket sales which go towards supporting athletic programs at Preble.

Who Will Benefit?

Not only will the football and soccer programs benefit from synthetic turf, but other groups as well:

  • Co-curricular activities and physical education classes
  • Soccer, track, football, dance, marching band, cross country, la crosse, baseball and softball
  • Middle and elementary school activities
  • City park and recreation programs
  • Community programs such as semi-pro clubs, Special Olympics, youth camps, etc.

*Add video of current field drone footage and student testimonials when available
